Quiet people, good conversations, no rush.

Introvert Dating: A Site Built Around How You Actually Socialise

Let's clear up something that gets muddled constantly, because it matters for what you're looking for.

Introversion is about where your energy comes from. An evening of people costs you something, and you get it back by being on your own. It says nothing about whether you're good with people. Plenty of introverts are excellent company, funny, warm, entirely capable of holding a room. They just want to go home afterwards.

Shyness is different. It's a fear of being judged, and it's uncomfortable in a way introversion isn't. You can be a shy extrovert, which is a genuinely frustrating combination: you want the party and you dread it.

Most people are somewhere in the middle, and plenty are both. But if you're the first kind, you don't need fixing and you're not at a disadvantage. You need a way of meeting people that doesn't run entirely on the energy you have least of.

Why Online Dating Suits Introverts Better Than It Suits Anyone Else

This is the part nobody says out loud, so here it is.

Meeting people in the traditional way asks you to spend a great deal of social energy on people you know nothing about. A night out is four hours, a room full of noise, and a very small chance that one of the people in it is somebody you'd actually like. You do the expensive part first and find out afterwards whether it was worth it.

Online dating reverses that entirely. You do the filtering before you spend anything.

By the time you're sitting opposite somebody, you already know roughly what they're like, what they're after, and whether you can talk to them. You've spent almost no energy getting there. That's not a compromise or a second-best option. For an introvert it's a straightforwardly better system, and it's why a lot of quiet people do far better online than they ever did in a pub.

You Can Also Stop When You're Tired

Which sounds trivial and isn't.

Ten minutes on a Tuesday evening is a perfectly reasonable amount of dating to do. Nobody is watching, nobody is disappointed, and there's no social cost to closing the tab and going back to your book. Try leaving a party after ten minutes.

What Our Members Have In Common

Not a personality type. A preference for how the whole thing goes.

People here tend to prefer one proper conversation to twenty polite ones. They'd rather a quiet pub than a loud bar, an afternoon than a big night, a message that says something to a message that says "hey". A lot of them have tried the mainstream apps and found the pace exhausting: the volume, the speed, the sense that you're being sorted through.

Plenty are introverts. Plenty would call themselves shy. Some are neither and simply want to meet somebody quieter, because they've worked out that's who they get on with. All of which makes for a considerably calmer place to look.

The Two-Introverts Question

People ask whether two quiet people will just sit in silence.

In practice it's usually the opposite. Two introverts tend to skip the small talk entirely and get to something interesting inside ten minutes, because neither of them is enjoying the weather conversation and both are relieved when it ends. It's the pairing our members most often say worked when nothing else had.

The one thing worth knowing is that neither of you will chase. Two people who both wait to be asked will wait a very long time. Somebody has to send the message, and on a site where everyone understands that, it may as well be you.

What Joining Actually Involves

Less than you're probably imagining, which is deliberate.

Signing up takes a couple of minutes and costs nothing. You then have a profile, which is the only bit worth spending time on, and the useful thing to know is that a short honest one outperforms a long polished one almost every time. One specific detail does more work than five general ones: "I like reading" is invisible, while "I've read the same three books every winter for a decade" is a person, and it hands somebody an easy opening line.

After that you can browse without doing anything at all. Nobody is notified, nobody is waiting, and there's no counter anywhere telling you how long you've been looking. A lot of our members spent their first week reading profiles and nothing else, which is a perfectly reasonable way to start.

When you do want to say something, you message. That's the whole mechanism. No swiping against a timer, no queue of people expecting an immediate reply, no sense that the site is pushing you along faster than you'd like.

Is There an App?

Not as such, and we'd rather say so than fudge it.

There's nothing to download. The site runs in your browser and works properly on a phone, which means it also inherits whatever text size, contrast or accessibility settings you already use rather than overriding them with its own.

The practical effect is that ten minutes is a complete session. Waiting for the kettle, on the bus, before the thing you actually sat down to watch. For most of our members that turns out to suit them better than an app that wants a daily streak out of them.

For the messaging and first-meeting specifics, our dating tips go further, and there are date ideas that don't involve a crowded room. Or just have a look at who's on the site and see what you make of it.

One Honest Note

Shyness and social anxiety aren't the same thing. If the thought of meeting somebody new brings on something closer to genuine dread, that's worth talking to your GP about, and it isn't something a dating site can help with.

Plenty of our members are quiet, nervous, out of practice, or all three, and they do perfectly well here. But we'd rather say that plainly than pretend a website is a treatment.

Somebody who'd rather talk properly than shout over a bar is already on here looking. Join free and find them.
